I wasn't quite sure at first whether or not I was going to enjoy Poison Tongue, while the blurb intrigued me, as I started reading I was a bit confused. After putting the book down and coming back to it, I found myself completely immersed in the story and its colorful characters. Not to mention the mystery surrounding not only Monroe, but Levi's best friend Ward, as well.
This may be a slow burn romance but the tension is a very steamy buildup that finally explodes on the page when Levi and Monroe come together. It's well worth the wait.
Levi Bell and his family possess the gifts and abilities to connect with the paranormal. Passed from generation to generation, they all have different abilities that allow them to see the world most of us can only imagine. Levi has the ability to see people's souls, good or bad, and he can't escape it. Darkness has always been drawn to Levi and in turn it calls to him. He sees it in his dreams and feels it in his waking life. So when it seems that the Devil has come back to town, Levi is not surprised that he's both attracted and repulsed by it.
Levi’s sister Silvi has the ability to see and interact with ghosts. Because of her connection she is rarely afraid of them. Levi’s mother is psychic, she warns Levi when he's younger to stay far away from the bayou, that it's dangerous and evil lurks there.
Levi’s Gran who has passed away, but seems to be there when Levi needs her the most, had the ability of seeing the past, present and future and warned Levi that he would fall in love with the devil.
“One day you’ll fall in love with the devil. Lord, will you ever love him. And he will love you right back. But remember, Levi, loving a man with darkness on his soul can cause you to go mad. It could cause you to lose your own soul. And, sweetheart, I’m not sure if you’d be the same person without your soul.”
One of the most interesting characters is Levi’s best friend, Ward. He seemed to be everywhere and was always determined to help and protect Levi, but I was confused on how he fit in with the rest of the family. There is a very interesting dynamic there.
And of course there is Monroe.
Monroe Poirier is cursed. Levi can see the evil that envelopes and invades him in the form of serpents that slither along his entire body. Monroe has returned home where it's known he's not welcome. The townspeople have labeled him a murderer and a monster, they say he's evil and Monroe believes it as well. He has no hope of a different life and definitely not of a romance with Levi.
The entire setting of the book helped to paint the dark creepy and mysterious feel of the story. The Bayou, the swamps, the heat. It was all the perfect set for this type of story.
All in all, I absolutely loved Poison Tongue. The story, the characters, the setting. It all made for an incredible reading experience and I highly recommend this one.
