Excerpt

There had been slides of various microscopic plants and animals, but one particular experiment made Jeremy very uncomfortable. It must have shown on his face because Arnold slapped him on the back.

“Dude, it’s only a little prick. You let a little blood flow on the glass slide and put another glass slide overtop. Then you can look at things in the microscope. It’s really cool.”

Maybe it’s cool, but I can’t risk it.

The more Arnold talked about it, the more uncomfortable Jeremy became. Jeffrey raised an eyebrow. He whispered to Arnold, trying—and failing—to not let Jeremy hear, “Look. Maybe Jeremy is hemophobic and maybe you should just back off.”

Arnold guffawed deep in his throat. He replied in a very controlled and well-directed snickered whisper, “Don’t you mean ‘homophobic’?”

Jeremy wasn’t sure what was said after that, but he could tell Jeffrey wasn’t too pleased. He’d punched Arnold in the arm again, much harder than before. “Hemophobia is the fear of blood, you ass.”

Jeremy left Arnold and Jeffrey to play-fight amongst themselves. He walked over to Mrs. Girard and was about to explain to her that he’d recently cut himself and wasn’t sure if he could spare any more blood, when his teacher pulled him aside into a more private corner.

“Mr. Newton, I have been informed about your… situation. You’ve expressed your reluctance about exposing people to your… problem. I don’t think it’s an issue, especially if you bandage yourself afterward and refrain from participating in any blood-brother type rituals. I think you’ll be fine, but I’ll leave it to you.”

Why couldn’t she have just made the decision for me?

Jeremy frowned all the way back to his stool. He decided to use the excuse he was going to give his teacher on his new classmates. Although Arnold looked skeptical, one look from Jeffrey and he acquiesced. Jeremy did not prick himself that day.

Jeffrey’s blood looked really nice though. Is it wrong to think that?

About the Author

After publishing several adult stories under a different name, NED ERICSSON decided to reach deep down inside himself and write a story for which a younger generation, as well as the older ones, might relate. He hopes he succeeded in making people think.

Ned looks forward to writing many more stories to entertain and he hopes provoke some minds into thinking about today’s issues through their telling.
