Guest Post: Heart of Glass by Ari McKay

BLURB:

Fear of being like his unfaithful father has put high walls around senior litigator Asher Caldwell’s heart. Can former district attorney Zach Richardson knock them down to reveal the passionate man beneath the commitment-phobic workaholic, or will Zach’s own jealousy destroy what they’re trying to build?

A new life and a new love—that’s what Zach’s hoping for when he leaves the DA’s office and lets his friends give him a makeover. But the jury’s still out on whether the experiment was a success. His new look gets the attention of his boss and secret crush, Asher Caldwell, and leads to a seduction. Unfortunately, to Zach’s horror he learns that Asher assumed he was a paid escort. Asher is equally mortified to discover he had sex with an employee. Even so, the encounter meant a lot to both men, and they want to give dating a shot. Their romance born out of mistaken identity might work if Zack can trust Asher to be satisfied with the love of only one man… and if Asher can trust himself.

Hello, everyone! We’re so grateful to the lovely folks at Bayou Book Junkie for hosting us on the blog today. We’re here to discuss our latest release, Heart of Glass from Dreamspinner Press.

This is the third story in our Lawyers in Love series, and it introduces Asher Caldwell, who is the business partner of Cal Monroe from Fortune’s Slings and Cupid’s Arrows. Asher is in charge of the litigation side of Caldwell and Monroe, a position he inherited from his father, Ted. But other than the business, Asher wants absolutely nothing to do with his father, who is unfaithful and unable to stay with the same woman for very long. He actually fears the same kind of inability to commit in himself as he sees in his father, and he’s vowed never to put any partner through the same thing.

To address his physical needs, Asher uses escorts hired from a very discreet agency, and he never sees the same man twice. So it isn’t a surprise to him when a very hot young man turns up on his doorstep asking to see him.

But Zach Richardson, the young man in question, isn’t an escort. He is, in fact, an attorney who works for Asher, and has had a crush on Asher for months. Zach even applied to Caldwell and Monroe because of Asher. Having worked for the District Attorney as a prosecutor on a case where Asher was counsel for the defense, Zach couldn’t help but be impressed with Asher’s ability to sway a jury -- and to make Zach think just how much he’d like Asher to focus all that passion and charisma on him. He doesn’t think he’s in Asher’s league, and even after his best friends give him a serious makeover.

Needless to say, Zach is blown away when he arrives at Asher’s apartment to deliver some legal documents, and finds himself subject to a skillful seduction at Asher’s hands. He doesn’t even want to resist when Asher takes him to bed, and the chemistry between them is explosive. After their passionate encounter, he’s surprised when Asher turns polite but distant, obviously expecting Zach to leave -- and when Zach does, he discovers, to his horror, that Asher had been expecting a male escort, and had mistaken Zach for his anonymous bed partner for the night.

While the setup is pretty dramatic, the story really is one about love, trust and acceptance. Asher has to learn to accept that he doesn’t have to be defined by his father’s failures, and to trust that he can be faithful to one special man. Zach needs to accept that he really is attractive to Asher, and to trust that Asher won’t get bored with him. And both of them have to come to terms with a love that begins in a most peculiar way - and believe that a heart of glass can bring light to both their lives, and be strong enough to never break.

Thanks for giving us a few minutes of your time, and we hope you’ll give our story a chance to claim your heart!

When not writing, they can often be found scheming over costume designs or binge watching TV shows together.

Arionrhod is a systems engineer by day who is eagerly looking forward to (hopefully) becoming a full time writer in the not-too-distant future. Now that she is an empty-nester, she has turned her attentions to finding the perfect piece of land to build a fortress in preparation for the zombie apocalypse, and baking (and eating) far too many cakes.

McKay is an English teacher who has been writing for one reason or another most of her life. She also enjoys knitting, reading, cooking, and playing video games. She has been known to knit in public. Given she has the survival skills of a gnat, she’s relying on Arionrhod to help her survive the zombie apocalypse.
