Release Day Review: I Heart Boston Terriers by Rick R. Reed

Title: I Heart Boston Terriers
Author: Rick R. Reed
Release Date: September 20, 2017
Category: Contemporary
Pages: 54

Author's Note: This edition has been extensively revised.
When Aaron finds Mavis, an emaciated and shy Boston terrier, at a pet adoption fair, his heart goes out to her—completely.
When Christian, manning the adoption fair for the Humane Society that autumn Saturday, finds Aaron, his heart goes out to him—completely.
This is a story about embracing love, whether it’s for someone who walks on four legs or on two. Mavis’s journey back to wholeness and finding her forever home parallels the story of two men discovering each other at the perfect moment—a moment that defies logic, propriety, and common sense. But when did love ever follow a rational course?
First edition published by Amber Allure, January 2012.

I Heart Boston Terriers is a short 65-page novella. This story doesn't have a HEA or even a HFN, but you have the promise that something more than a hookup is going to happen between the MC's.

Aaron is living with his sister after a break-up and trying to get his life going again. He and his sister end up at an adoption fair and they come across a dog who has obviously been abused and is afraid of people. But, she likes Aaron and after pressure from his sister and Christian, the volunteer at the fair, he adopts the dog. Christian is interested in Aaron and takes his personal information from his adoption form to follow up with him the next day.

I thought Aaron's sister was horribly done. At first, they were all cuddly siblings which are supposedly confused for a couple when they go out, and then hours later, she's a crazy person who is horrible and unlikable. She talks Aaron into getting a rescue dog that he really doesn't want to get. She pays for everything for said rescue dog, including organic food so Aaron can make his own dog food. And then she turns into Cruella de Ville. Honestly, for such a short book, she's left a bigger impression on me than either of the MC's.

This is a quick read story that ends with a potential relationship between the two MC's. But, who would believe a HEA or HFN story when the two MC's have only been aware of the other's existence for less than 24 hours? So, for all those with a creative imagination, you get to give this couple the ending you want!
