A place for everything, and everything in its place.
Karmen Handel’s life growing up had been anything but quiet and simple. A deadbeat father, a mother who never wanted her, and a grandmother who could care less were the perfect recipe to ensure Karmen built a wall around herself and never let anyone in. When her past comes back to haunt her, Karmen has no one to help her. Until Nickel.
Complicated. Dirty. Restless.
Live to ride. Ride to live.
Nickel Cunningham lives free with the brothers he calls family and has never craved anything more until he met Karmen. The shy, quiet nurse who cares for his grandma caught his eye months ago, and he hasn’t been able to get her off his mind since. Nickel knows what he wants, but he’s never had to fight for it before. Until Karmen.
“You got plans tonight?” I was done chasing this chick. It was time to get straight to the point.
“Um…”“You say that a lot, babe.”“What?” she asked, confused.“You say um a lot.”“Oh, I guess I never noticed.” She stood there staring at me.“Plans? You got any tonight?”“Um.” She realized she said um again and blushed red, as her eyes darted down. “No plans.”“You ever been to Shake the Lake?”“Once, when I was seventeen. I didn’t get to see the fireworks, though.”I reached out to grab my keys but grabbed her hand instead. “Come with me tonight,” I pleaded, our eyes locking. She tried to jerk her hand out of my grasp, but I tightened my grip. “I can’t,” she insisted.“Sure you can. You just told me you don’t have plans.”“Um, I forgot that I have to go to…um…badminton practice,” she stuttered.“Badminton practice?”I didn’t think she could blush anymore, but her cheeks turned a dark shade of red, and she nodded yes. “I felt that I needed to broaden my horizons and figured that would be a good place to start.”“Well, how about you broaden your horizon with me tonight, and you can pick back up with your badminton practice next week?”
4 Stars!
Karmen likes boxes, they make it easy to sort all the tough problems and emotions she's faced since she was a kid. Like her father going to prison when she was 13 years old for a deadly car accident he caused while driving drunk. She was then forced to live with a grandmother who barely tolerated her presence let alone showed her any kind of love. She got through it all by placing her emotions in a metaphorical box and pushing it in the back of her mind. Now a RN at a nursing home, she wishes she could put Nickel and what he makes her feel in a box, too. However, he doesn't seem to want her to do that.
Nickel doesn't like the direction his chapter of the Fallen Lords MC is headed. He wants to start up a new chapter so he can spearhead things in a direction he feels more comfortable with. As things are growing increasingly more difficult to handle, his one bright spot is the sweet yet shy RN at his grandmother's home. Karmen is both beautiful and sweet and he finds himself doing anything he can to get her on the back of his bike.
This was my first Winter Travers book and it was a good introduction to her style and take on the biker world. I enjoyed the book even if I didn't quite fall in love with it or the characters and I'll probably read the next in the series. I guess my biggest problem with the story was really just a matter of craving something different.
I read so much MC Romance that sometimes I find myself craving something unique and exciting. It's hard these days to really find that and characters that haven't been done time and time again. I felt as if Karmen, while sweet, was too much of the stereotypical innocent woman that so many of these stories try to portray. I didn't find that special something about her that pulled me in and had me connecting with her character.
I liked Nickel and thought he was, dare I say, sweet. He was the big Alpha male but he definitely had a tender side reserved for Karmen. I had no problem picturing his character in my head. I loved how he was with Karmen and how protective he was.
Overall, it was an entertaining read and I'd definitely recommend it, especially to the fans of Winter Traver's books.
