About the Bad Behavior Series

It’s “hell no” at first sight for newly partnered detectives Andreas Ruffner and Darren Corliss. Darren is too chipper, Andreas is too gruff, and that whole “IA wants me to prove you’re a dirty cop” thing really doesn’t get them off on the right foot.

It doesn’t matter if they like each other. They’re partners and that’s final. Though Andreas is easy on the eyes. And Darren is kind of cute. And . . . okay, maybe they can make this work.

OMG, I Have To Be Here Again?

I’ve never written many series. Part of it was because of the time and planning it took, part of it was the uncertainty of the first book’s success, making the second one a gamble, and part of it was just plain flittishness. Authors will go on and on and on about rabid plot bunnies fighting it out in their head, and you know what? It’s totally correct, at least in my case. I’d get done with a book, and by then my brain would be chanting at me move on! Let’s work on this now! And that would be that.

There are a few cures for the series blues. One is having an idea that’s so much fun, you just can’t help revisiting it. I did a supervillains series on that premise—oh my gosh, nothing has to repeat, I can do ANYTHING I WANT! And I did and it was lovely. Another trick I tried was basically taking one novel and serializing it—turning it into six installments. Readers crucified me. Not going there again. Yet I can put one chapter a week of a novel up on my blog and everything is fine. *throws up hands*

In this case, though, the secret to writing a series was writing it with an experienced coauthor who knows what the hell she’s doing. Also, it turns out, writing a book with another person can go so fast, character fatigue doesn’t have a chance to set in, and before you know it you’ve got four books done in under a year, and BAM! Series completed. It’s amazing. Suspicious Behavior begins very close to the end of Risky Behavior, and if you’ve read the first book, then you’ll be able to jump right in with no problem. If it feels like a smooth transition, that’s because it was for us—we began Book Two almost as soon as Book One was turned in, and that made it sooo much easier to flow with.

That’s what we’re going for, anyway. Continuity, in plot, character development, and emotional impact. I hope Suspicious Behavior hits the spot.

Cari Z was a bookworm as a child and remains one to this day. In an effort to combat her antisocial reading behavior, she did all sorts of crazy things, from competitive gymnastics to alligator wresting (who even knew that was legal!) to finally joining the Peace Corps, which promptly sent her and her husband to the wilds of West Africa, stuck them in a hut, and said, "See ya!" She also started writing, because some things she just thought she could do better. She's still climbing that ladder, but can't stop herself from writing, or from sharing what she creates.
