I had high hopes for this book. I loved the blurb and cover and I love age-gap/May-December books, so it had to be good, right? Unfortunately, I was wrong.
I'm aware I might be in the minority here, but if a book has hints/tinges of BDSM or D/s, I need to be aware of it before reading, the blurb says something about obedience and control, but sorry that's not enough warning for me. I read BDSM occasionally, but when I do, I know beforehand what I'm getting into. This book has a bit of D/s and it came as a surprise, but more than the BDSM lite scenes, what bothered me was something that the author addressed further into the story:
“There’s no one way to do anything. I saw all kind of D/s, BDSM relationships, from lovely-dovey pampering sweet stuff to guys in full leather hoods and leashes. People did it now and then or lived it twenty-four seven. There are as many ways to be as there are people. I don’t care what anyone does as long as it’s consensual.”
“It was totally consensual,” Chris assured him. “Jay-Cee asked me if I was sure. He kept asking me if I wanted this.”
Benny made a scoffing sound. He looked almost angry. “Did he give you any more detail about what he meant by ‘this’?”
“He asked me if I had submitted to anyone before.”
“And did you know what he meant?”
“Kind of?” Now Benny did look angry. His eyebrows were lowered and he frowned. “Chris. You can’t give a valid consent when you’re not sure you’re consenting to! And you obviously didn’t.”
“I’m sorry.” He knew he was an idiot.
Benny shook his head. “No, this is one hundred percent on Jay-Cee. You feeling confused and blindsided is his fault, not yours. He should have known better.”
I have to agree with Benny (and the author there), one of the bases of a BDSM, D/s relationship is consent, but it should be given with full understanding of what they're getting into and Jay-Cee, being older and supposedly wiser, should've made sure Chris knew what he expected of him.
Another issue I had was that once Jay-Cee decided they should be together, he was all in at full-speed, and even if he wasn't sure of Chris' feelings, he expected him to be the same way. I agree that a relationship has to be both ways, but Chris wasn't ready to be in a relationship, nor he wanted to be. He was attracted to Jay-Cee and wanted to be with him, but he didn't go in expecting to be together forever with him and all. Did he hurt Jay-Cee when he told him this? Of course, and I felt kind of sorry for Jay-Cee, but he kind of brought it on himself.
So, yeah, I had some issues with the story itself. The writing was fairly good, even if some parts felt a bit disjointed, choppy. Still, it was an enjoyable read and while I didn't love either Chris or Jay-cee, I liked them. They had good chemistry and their scenes together were hot. I loved Benny and I'm going to go and read his story, because he was a stellar secondary character.
