Ray travels to Vietnam for a week of volunteer work teaching English and Basketball to special needs children. When he gets to the camp he meets his bunk mate, Xin. He is immediately attracted to Xin, but what does he have to offer? He's a shell of the person he once was, after an injury keeps him in almost constant pain and unable to participate in his one true love: Basketball. Besides, he doesn't even know if Xin is gay.
This story is hard to rate. I'd have to rate it in sections. The first half was slow and confusing, and I found myself lost. I've read other books that are based in Vietnam and the descriptions brought the place to life. That didn't happen with this book, but I had to keep going. The second half once we are leaving Vietnam, is so much better. It focuses mainly on Ray and Xin, and was not only much easier to follow, but much more enjoyable.
Ray and Xin had an outstanding chemistry. The feelings they share come off the pages at you. You can feel the love in the air. The sex was not only steamy, but written almost poetically.
As much as the first half of the book had me lost and confused, I have to admit, it held me captivated and turning the pages. For the most part, the book is well-written. I'd give the first half 1 star, and the 2nd half 4 stars, so I'll meet in the middle and give it 3 recommendable stars.
