Tucker Wilde’s life is in a tailspin. Twenty-four hours ago, he was one of the top second basemen in the all-shifter professional baseball league. Now, he’s lost his starting spot to a rookie, been dumped by his girlfriend, and had a night of explosive passion with a man—a teammate at that. He can’t get Dixon out of his mind—even though Tucker still believes himself to be straight. With his career in jeopardy, he’s unsure where to turn or how to fix the mess.
Dixon Foxx is a baseball prodigy, though a perfectionist father stole any joy he might find in the game. He only sticks with it because it’s all he knows—and because of Tucker, the man Dixon’s wanted since they met. His dreams come true one night, only to turn into a nightmare the next morning when Tucker blows off their incredible time together as a drunken mistake, never to happen again.
The life of a switch hitter is all about mixing things up. Tucker excels at it. Only this time, the game isn’t on the line—his heart is.
3 Stars
When I first saw the blurb for this story I was super excited to give it a go. I love Shifter stories and I was in the mood to read one. I thought it might be fun to see what a world that had all Shifter baseball leagues might be like. While I very much enjoyed the idea, the story itself didn't quite live up to my expectations.
The writing was technically good and the author definitely has a talent for creating interesting characters and thrusting them into the world of Baseball. My difficulty with the story really had more to do with my ignorance of Cheyenne's Shifter world. It was quite different than what I am used to reading and I found it hard to connect to it along with the characters. I'm also not much of a baseball fan and while I've enjoyed books in the past with baseball theme I didn't really care about it in this case.
I love the idea of Mates. That there is one other being that is fated to be yours. The perfect other half of your soul. Mates in this world aren't really like that, however. Yes, there is an unbelievable connection between the two people but when it comes down to it, I'd compare it more to the way we find and think of our spouses. I missed having that undeniable, all-encompassing, destined to be, pull generally associated with shifters and their mates.
As for Tucker and Dixon, I just couldn't connect with them. It was hard for me to remember who was who and what was happening between them because their voices were too similar, at least to me. Dixon was the one who considered himself gay from the beginning and Tucker believed he was straight. However, as I was reading I kept questioning which guy was which.
I was finally able to keep them straight but by then I was having a hard time liking Tucker. He basically throws himself at Dixon and graphically tells him what he wanted to happen between them. Now, he was drunk at the time but seemed to be desperate for it. The next morning he does a complete 180 and makes it clear to Dixon that he's not gay and for lack of a better way to put it, a hole is a hole when you're drunk and horny. It was infuriating and frustrating. I hated how long it was drawn out for as well. He would not stop being a jacka** long enough to grip the fact that he was attracted to Dixon and wanted him.
I just wasn't impressed and to tell you the truth wished Dixon and Tucker would have just gotten over the BS sooner. I will say though that for people who are already familiar with this series, you'll probably enjoy it. I might try the series again but from the beginning, get myself familiarized with the world they live in better.
