When Dashiel’s body is found dumped on an East London wasteland, his best friend Danny sets out to find the killer. But Danny finds interaction difficult and must keep his world small in order to survive. By day he lives in an abandoned swimming pool and fixes electrical devices to trade for supplies, but by night, alone, he hunts sharks a reckless search for dangerous men who prey on the vulnerable.
A chance meeting with an American boy selling himself on the streets throws this lonely existence into disarray. Micky is troubled, fragile, and Danny feels a desperate need to protect him. Though from what, he doesn't know. As Danny discovers more about Micky, he realises that what Micky needs saving from is the one thing Danny has no idea how to fight.
To save Micky, Danny must risk expanding his world and face something that scares him more than any shark ever could: trusting he will be accepted for who he is. If a freezing winter on the streets, a sadistic doctor, and three thousand miles don't tear them apart first, that is.

This story was heartbreakingly beautiful. Danny made my heart hurt a little because he was so sincere yet vulnerable but also strong at the same time. When I first started the book, I wanted to see a little bit of the friendship between Dashiel and Danny. I was sad that we did not get to see how close they were and how that influenced Danny's decision to go out on the streets hunting for sharks. But once I got further into the book, we see little pieces of Dashiel and how much he meant to Danny and also how much Danny meant to him. And then we meet Micky, and he is a shining sun to Danny which I loved so much.
I adored Danny in this book, but the way Micky treated Danny made me so happy. He saw past the person Danny was on the outside and just treated him like someone he wanted to get to know. I wanted so much for them to just find a million dollars and live happily ever after. Which I know is super ridiculous, but I just needed them to have it easy! The book obviously does not quite go like that, it was a raw and tough story to read but so beautifully written that I could not stop. For me, the writing perfectly portrayed Danny and who he was as a person. Both of these characters were flawed but seeing them together made me soooo happy! I very much appreciated getting the epilogue because I needed that closure from this story. This was a new to me author and I will absolutely go and find more books by her!
