So, generally, I adore Anyta Sunday’s books. They’re funny, romantic and totally relatable. Some of my favorite books are ones she’s written. Having said that, Shrewd Angel just missed the mark for me and I’m not even completely sure why that is. I enjoyed the premise and usually, I can get behind the whole slow burn thing. So why did it not work for me this time?
First, let me start with what I did enjoy, Pax and Cliff. Individually these two were great. I found myself laughing out loud more than once. They had great banter, all of Anyta’s MC’s do so that’s not a big surprise and they both resonated with me. I was definitely along for the ride with them (However, it took forever to happen).
I think I felt as if there just wasn’t enough of the romance aspect. Like it took too long to even get there. It wasn’t so much a feeling of slow burn as it was a trying to get it started in the first place. I think I got a little bored by that (maybe I’m alone in that). I kept wanting to see Heath Ledger pop out so maybe my expectations weren’t realistic.
The writing was good, again, that’s to be expected with this author. She’s a wonderful storyteller that’s for sure. There was some good steaminess to it, I won’t deny it but it definitely could have used a touch more. I don’t know, maybe it was the length, maybe it was my mood, maybe it was the fact that I read it while I waited for my daughter to finish practicing piano. Either way, I still adore Anyta and I’ll still be searching her books out in the future.
