4 Stars!

Do not read this book if you're alone in the house and/or close to water!!

I read this book in winter, and read some crucial parts alone in my house, soaking in a bath, when there was a sudden noise and I ended up totally freaked out, to a degree that I didn't know whether I should stay in the bath or get dressed and explore! After telling my brain to get with it and get out of the book, I got dressed and explored and luckily the noise was from a cat and not one of the things that appeared in this tale, phew!

So, this is a tale with a very decent premise, and with happenings that are eerily believable. It had me invested in it and I liked the build-up, how the author tied everything in, and the ending was satisfying enough. I say enough as I believed the more suspension of disbelief stuff, but not quite slight 'let's make everything right for everyone' part.

It does say 'to be continued' at the end, but to me, it felt as if the tale were complete, as we got to see ends tied up for everybody. Actually, this end bit is what made me give the book a 4-Star rating rather than a 5-Star: it all seemed a little too tied up, a little too twee. With the pace, with the elements of intrigue via the use of pronouns, with not giving a character's name or identifiable feature until several pages, or even paragraphs later, with the happenings that the author decided to include, with the characters who for the most were mature adults, the ending felt a little out of line with the rest of the tale. I mean, kids won't be reading this book (I don't think, and I hope not, because of the scariness, nothing else) so why sugarcoat it all at the end? Obviously, it's the author's right to, but I think I'd have appreciated a few unexplained things, a touch more 'feels real' in the context of the tale. Still, that's only MHO, and this was a very readable tale, so much so that I went and checked out the author's website to see when the next might be coming. Please, Mr Feeley, might you be able to update your Coming Soon page? I'm sure I can't be the only fan of this book!
