Synopsis:

The camping trip from hell may be the first stop on the road to happily-ever-after in Rough Terrain, the final book in Annabeth Albert’s critically acclaimed, fan-favorite Out of Uniform series.

Navy SEAL Renzo Bianchi has a soft spot for Canaan Finley, and not only because the man makes a mean smoothie. He’s the first guy to get Renzo’s motor revving in a long time. But when he agrees to Canaan’s insane charade—one all-access fake boyfriend, coming right up—he never expects more than a fling.

Creating a hot Italian SEAL boyfriend to save face seemed like a good idea…until his friends called Canaan’s bluff. Now he’s setting off into the woods with the very man who inspired his deception, and Canaan is not the outdoorsy type. The sparks are already flying when a flash flood separates them from their group, leaving Renzo and Canaan very much trapped…very much alone in the wilderness.

Working together to come up with a plan for survival is sexier than either of them expects. But back in the real world, being a couple is bringing its own set of hazards…

Teaser:

“I really don’t see what the big deal is if I show up alone,” Canaan said when Damian finally paused for air.

On this Renzo agreed. Any friend who demanded Canaan bring a date wasn’t a real friend, but apparently this Damian saw things differently and Canaan had to listen through what sounded like a hell of a lecture.

“I just want to hang with you guys.” The want in Canaan’s voice did something to Renzo’s insides. He didn’t have the full story about why Canaan wasn’t in the band anymore, but anyone listening could tell how much the group meant to him. And the entitled asshole on the other end of the call was making that hard, and Renzo wanted to teach him a thing or two about friendship. Almost without permission from his brain, he stopped messing with the tire and got his own phone out.

This was stupid, the sort of stupid he’d vowed to avoid, and he was almost surely going to regret this, but he couldn’t stop himself from typing, I’ll do it. But we’re taking my truck. Okay?

Rather than send the text, he stepped closer and passed the phone to Canaan. His eyes went wide and the best smile spread across his face, sending warmth through Renzo’s insides and almost making up for his certainty that this was a bad idea.

“Actually, my phone just beeped with a message. Looks like I’ll be able to bring my guy after all. He’s still gotta find out about leave, I’m sure.” He looked at Renzo for confirmation, and Renzo nodded. The senior chief would probably be happy to hear from him, unless Renzo told him the full story, which he had no intention of doing. Fewer people who knew the extent to which he was about to make an idiot of himself the better.

“But yeah, we should be there.” Canaan’s voice was way happier now. He wrapped up the call with a promise to email someone named Kelly. Pocketing the phone, he returned to the car.

“Really? Man, I am going to owe you so huge.” Canaan gave him another smile that made Renzo’s nerves crackle like sparks on det cord. He could easily get addicted to those looks,

4 stars

Rough Terrain is the 7th and final book in the Out of Uniform series by Annabeth Albert. This book follows Lorenzo "Renzo" "Rooster" Bianchi and Canaan Finley. Renzo is a SEAL. Growing up he was a glasses-wearing, chubby kid but that all changed after his older brother has an accident. His brother wanted to be a SEAL so in guilt Renzo decided to follow his brother's dream. After enlisting and becoming a SEAL, he finds out who he truly is. Cannan is a student working at a smoothie restaurant while going to school part-time to be a nurse. He used to play drums in a band with his ex but came back home after his grandmother gets sick. After she passes away, he stays home to take care of his grandfather. Renzo stays away from relationships because of a problem. What starts out as a fake relationship turns into hero worship of sorts then turns into a relationship. Will it last?

I liked Renzo. He was genuinely a nice and interesting character. He is an amazing big brother, a good son, a good SEAL and a bit of a workout Instagram icon. Canaan is a drummer, a good grandson and he is going to be a great nurse. Being an Instagram fitness model and drumming, respectively, were important aspects in each character but I found they both were brushed over a lot in all the drama that was their relationship.

I really liked this book and I am so sad it is the last book in the series. As I mentioned above, I was a bit disappointed in the fact that some important parts of the characters had been brushed over a lot in the story itself. But I will reread this book and the entire series while I try and curb my excitement for the next upcoming series.
