Synopsis
Derek Vaughn is a little too serious. He’s a type A control personality with a penchant for order and a love of water polo. But he’s determined to enjoy his last year of college. The real world with a serious job and big expectations can wait for a few months. He’s going soak up every minute on campus with his friends and teammates before he moves on. The only possible kink in his plan is the new guy on the team… also known as his nemesis.Gabe Chadwick has big Olympic dreams. His transfer between Southern California universities has nothing to do with scholastics. The degree is his backup plan. He’s not there to party or make friends. And he certainly isn’t going to announce his sexuality. But he can’t deny there’s something special about the uptight team captain. However, when an unwitting friendship and mutual attraction collide, both will have to decide if this is the real thing or if they’re about to lose it all in the deep.
4.5 Stars!
Out in the Deep is book 1 in the newest series by Lane Hayes, Out in College, and it features two water polo players, enemies to lovers, UST and some very hot sexy times.
When the book starts Gabe and Derek are on opposing teams and Gabe has been the bane of Derek's existence for a long time. The last thing Derek expects is for Gabe to become his newest teammate or that the tension brewing between them will be so explosive. However things start between them, they soon find themselves in a secret relationship since they're both in the closet, but what will happen if someone finds out about them?
I loved Derek and Gabe, they were fun, sweet and relatable and were scorching hot together. While they start out as enemies, it wasn't long until that changed and I adored seeing how well they fit together.
The secondary cast was a great addition to the story, I absolutely loved Evan and can't wait to read his story. While I didn't care for Derek's ex when I first read the book, she grated on my nerves this second time around and even if I still applaud Lane's decision not to demonize her, I can't say I was all that happy that Derek apologized to her after what she did.
Michael Pauley's narration was enjoyable, for the most part. There were some instances, like the sex scenes, in which the pace felt almost... frantic, maybe? It was too fast and it pulled me from the moment. Still, Mr. Pauley's voice is quite pleasant, so even with that, this is a great choice for an audiobook.
Ms. Hayes has this knack for writing characters that I can fall in love with and this book wasn't an exception. It was well-written and had a perfect balance of sweetness, romance, hotness and angst. Definitely an audiobook you don't want to miss out on!

However, as their tentative friendship blossoms into unexpected attraction, the lines between reality and fiction blur for both men. 5 Stars!
Out in the End Zone is book 2 in the Out in College series by Lane Hayes and while it can be read as a standalone, you'll be missing out if you don't read or listen to book 1 first. Not only was Out in the Deep fantastic, but Derek and Gabe have cameos in this new book and we met Evan there as Derek's roommate.
I loved Evan since I met him in book one. He seemed so easygoing and laidback, a go-with-the-flow kind of guy, and yes, he was that, but he's so much more than that, too. He'd gone through loss and resolved to bury a part of himself because of it, but once faced with the possibility of having something with Mitch, he simply can't stop it from happening and is mostly all in, only, he wasn't quite out. He figured his parents suspected, but no one else did and it wasn't easy for him to make a decision after what happened to him during senior year in high school. While closeted characters usually frustrate me, Evan was young and really, it's not that he's not willing to come out, he just hasn't found his reason to do it.
And then we have Mitch, who I liked a lot. He was understandably wary at times, waiting for the other shoe to drop considering Evan wasn't out and that was a tad annoying, but he seemed like a sweet, snarky, fun guy. The chemistry between Evan and Mitch was out of this world and it was great to see them progress from sort-of-fake-boyfriends into real boyfriends.
I loved catching up with Derek and Gabe and I'm very intrigued about Christian, Evan's team's captain, whose book we're getting next. I only wish we'd seen more of Mitch's grandma, who was wonderful!
Michael Pauley did a fantastic job with this audiobook! The pacing, the emotion, the way he brought Evan and Mitch to life somehow made this book even better, which was a feat considering it was already awesome.
All in all, Out in the End Zone was amazing in both e-book and audiobook, but if you have the chance, don't miss out on Mr. Pauley's narration, it was outstanding!
