Excerpt
I knew the danger for Sic was over, but I also knew that I’d be over soon. The fire blocked out path, so there was no help coming. I knew about gunshots in the chest.
Sic ran over me. “Hey, Senly.”
I smiled at the endearment. He never used them. “Hey, Sic.”
“Stay focused, Sen, and listen to me.” His brows were furrowed to knots. “I’ve called headquarters and they’ve already sent browns and olives. I specifically asked for helicopters, so they’ll be here very soon, and you’ll be in the good hands of the olives in no time.” He carefully put my head down on the ground and pulled out an army knife. I tilted my head sideways to find him going to his bike. He didn’t hesitate to put the knife through the leather seat. He loves his bike! “Here.” He came back to me and used the leather to cover my wound. I smiled at that, not feeling particularly optimistic, but I couldn’t let Sic know.
“Thank you, my—”
“Shhh.” Sic bent down and covered my lips with his, mumbling words. “Just keep breathing and stay awake.”
Sic sat down and held my head in his lap. I looked up and saw, against the backdrop of the sky in cardinal red, his angular face looking down at me. We were secluded by teal-colored woods around us. It was chaotic, for the forest was on fire. Despite the turmoil and the utter pain in my chest, I felt peaceful, as if all sounds had been erased except my shallow breathing.

Growing up in China, KEVIN CAUCHER never thought he’d grow up loving to write; never did he expect himself ending up in Australia either.
