A bomb destroyed high-powered lawyer Gil Lemieux’s seemingly perfect life, and PTSD has ruled every decision since the explosion that left him scarred inside and outside. Moving home with his mom is meant to be a temporary measure, just like proofreading for a medical institution is only meant to be a stopgap. But two years after taking on the wrong court case, he’s still living in fear.
Keith Kramer might be based 1,500 miles away from Gil, but their shared work brings them together—a chance meeting that’s life-changing. Gil is drawn to Keith’s good looks and intelligence, but it’s his innate understanding that Gil is more than the scars on his skin that is truly attractive. He’s everything Gil used to be and more. It blows Gil’s mind that his attraction might be returned.
Only doubt could widen the distance between them. Keith’s hopefulness, borne out of surviving some tough challenges of his own, isn’t enough to bridge the distance alone. Gil will need to believe he has as much to offer as Keith if they’re to build a life together.

Through Silver Scars, Posy Roberts shows us an in-depth study in PTSD and its consequences through Gil Lemieux, who survived an explosion with both internal and external scars that affect his life in almost every sense.

Gil's given up practicing Family Law, moved in with his mom and practically stopped living. He is working part time with a medical institution proofreading and when he has to travel to Minnesota for work, he meets Keith, who he feels is so out of his league. Only Keith doesn't feel that is the case, not by a long shot. He's fascinated by Gil from the first moment and after a pretty good first date, they start a long distance relationship through which they both start healing and support each other through their respective issues, Gil with his PTSD and Keith with the possibility of having his leg amputated as a result of an accident he suffered 6 years ago.

They are sweet together, even if sometimes I wanted to slap some sense into Gil. I understood it was difficult for him to get over his scars and how he thought other people saw him, but Keith showed him over and over and over again that he loved and wanted him, scars and all.

This was an emotional read, a journey of sorts as Gil navigated through life in an attempt to put back together all the pieces that had been blasted with the explosion and finally move forward. It was a story of hope and finding each other and managing to make things better through their mutual love and understanding of what they were going through. Definitely well worth reading!

Rating: 4.5 Stars.

Author Interview:

We are very happy to have Posy here with us at Bayou Book Junkie today!

Thanks for having me today and allowing me the chance to talk about Silver Scars.

What inspired you to write this story?

I enjoy writing about people struggling with conditions where is there no real cure, partly because I deal with numerous chronic illnesses of my own—some that have been with me since I was a toddler and others I encountered as an adult. Having something that will be with you forever can change how you think about the world and even change who you are.

I had to completely revamp my career/life because of my own struggles, and I’m a much happier person now than I think I would’ve been if I’d been able to go with my original plans. Watching characters in a book move through that process and come out on the other end, better than they ever dreamed, is inspiring to me. I’ve been lucky to have writing fill in the gaps my career was never able to reach.

How much research dealing with the PTSD subject matter was involved in writing this book?

I researched to help me write Gil’s experience with PTSD, but sadly, an incident happened while I was in college, so some of what I put into the book is based on my experience. I did do more reading to get a richer understanding of panic attacks and social anxiety and spoke to people in my life who live with these conditions, as well. In the end, I spent a lot more time researching what Keith deals with in this book, because it was far beyond of anything I’ve ever experienced.

What's your favorite gene to read?

MM Romance tops the charts, but I also love fact-filled books and DIY tomes.

Of all the books you have written do you have a favorite set of characters, and if so who are they?

This is like answering who my favorite child is. Perhaps this is why I had only one. ;) My immediate thought was Kevin and Hugo from my North Star trilogy, because I know them so intimately after writing over 300 thousand words about them. But I love the sexy, playful nature of Jack and Eli’s relationship in Cheeky Hipsters & Jocks almost as much as I love the supportive and intuitive understanding Gil and Keith have for each other in Silver Scars.

Besides writing what else do you enjoy doing?

I love hiking, geocaching, and singing. If I had the physical stamina, I’d garden more than I do, but I’m more in love with the notion of a huge, productive garden than the reality of the hard work. I also enjoy building and refinishing furniture. Yarn crafts and coloring are my mental escapes from the stress of the world.

About the author:

Posy Roberts writes about romantic male love. Whether these characters are family men, drag queens, or lonely men searching for connections, they all find a home in her stories.
Posy is married to a man who makes sure she doesn’t forget to eat or sleep; her daughter, a budding author and dedicated Whovian, helps her come up with character names. When Posy’s not writing, she enjoys crafting, hiking, and singing spontaneously about the mundane, just to make normal seem more interesting.
