I absolutely adored this book! And while I can say the same about the first book in the series, Trust the Focus, Megan Erickson really outdid herself with Focus on Me!
Colin sees himself as a failure, and as someone who won't finish what he starts, especially after having to drop out of college. He's on his way back to North Carolina from California and makes a stop in Vegas where he picks up a hitchhiker. He never imagined how that decision will change his life.
Riley has terminated his contract as a model and is traveling through the country in search for something that makes him feel. He thinks the Grand Canyon, or some sweat lodge will be just what he needs, but when they aren't he falls deeper into depression. Until he realizes that what makes him feel is Colin and not just a place, only it isn't quite that easy.
Colin needs someone that will need him and he finds that person in Riley, however, there's no magical cure for depression and he has to realize that loving and caring for Riley might not be enough in this case, while fighting his own feelings of inadequacy.
I felt so bad for Colin throughout the story. He really went out of his way to try to make things better for Riley, even when Riley kept pushing him away. He was loyal and understanding and while he'd never cared for anyone before, he did his best to do whatever he could to make things better, and afterward, to ask for help when it was way past what he could do himself.
I wanted to slap Riley a couple of times for making Colin suffer, although I did understand what he was going through and I was very happy when he finally realized that he needed help, even if it was still a work in progress.
This was such a fantastic, emotion-filled read, with compelling characters and a strong plot that just grabbed my interest from beginning to end. Even if it's part of a series, it can be read as a standalone, but you'll be missing out on another great story if you don't read Trust The Focus. Definitely recommendable!
