Teach Me by Sloan Johnson

Teach Me by Sloan Johnson

I want to thank Sloan for entrusting me with an ARC copy of her work. This was my first book by her, and she has a new fan.

Blurb

Two words stripped Austin Pritchard of the privileged life he’s used to. The moment he uttered the words, “I’m gay,” he realized there is no such thing as unconditional love. Now, he’s gone from traveling the world with his family to living on the streets trying to figure out how he’s going to stay in school.

A chance opportunity changes everything. Austin impresses the foreman and lands a job, but even more, he catches the eye of David Becker, who is determined to teach him that true love doesn’t come with strings.

The only thing David had as a child was love. His family struggled to keep food on the table and a roof over their heads. That has driven him to stay focused on his goals; become a tenured professor at a university and save enough money to build a home of his own.

It’s not until he sees an insecure college student working on his new house that he realizes that he hasn’t planned on someone to share his life with. He’s about to learn that everything he’s already accomplished is nothing compared to the task of making Austin see that he is worthy of love.

Review: Tracy's review of Teach Me by Sloan Johnson

4 stars for Teach Me!

Austin, a 20 year old college student, is given a bus ticket by his parent when he
comes out to them, and tells them he is gay. He is told by his parents that unless
he changes his disgusting lifestyle, being gay, he no longer has a home or a family
anymore. When school comes to an end Austin watches as all his fellow peers
parents show up to get them from school, while he is forced to pack what he
absolutely needs and take to the streets to live.

David, a 35 year old College Professor, just moving to a new town, and getting
ready to start his tenure at a new school, has come from a beyond dirt poor childhood,
but has managed to pull himself up and make something of his life. All David had as
a child was the love and support of his family. Being so poor has made David work
that much harder for the rings he wants and now has. David finds something he never
knew was missing in his life when he meets Austin at the job site where his new
home is being built. David discovers Austin and eventually, love.

On the streets Austin meets Casey and Bree a young couple about his age that are
also homeless. Casey and Bree take Austin under their wing and show him the ropes.
They show him where the safest places are to sleep, and how to get food. Casey brings
Austin with him on a weekend job, and there Austin meets David. David and Austin
have a mutual attration, and David wants to pursue this, but Austin is scared and
ashamed of the fact he is homeless. A fact he hides from David for quite some time.
David knows Austin struggles, and he wants to help, he just doesn't know to the extent
of Austin's struggles.

I struggled with the romance portion of this book. The concept was great, and I loved
Sloan's writing, but the difference, not so much in age but maturity level, made the
relationship feel too unbalanced. David was much too mature for Austin, and the
romance didn't work. I wanted more of a chemistry and connection between them.
This portion of the story just fell short.

What I did love about this book, was Austin, although at times I wanted to slap him
upside the back of his head!! I loved watching him come of age and mature. Watching
him become the man he becomes in the end. We clearly see a climax when Austin
finally goes from being a scared kid from the streets, to a man that is able to accept
the love and support David has been offering all along, with maturity and grace.

I loved the ending. I am a sucker for a HEA!! I look forward to more of Sloan's
work in the future.
