Early ARC Review: The Superstar by Patricia Logan

Blurb

Storm Ellison is the sexiest man on two legs. The gorgeous young star of “Trapped on an Island”, the hottest reality show on television, is instantly recognizable the moment he leaves his palatial mansion. Paparazzi follow him everywhere, leaving him no peace or privacy, selling his pictures to the tabloids, and cementing his reputation in the press as a slutty gay playboy. As Storm prepares to sign his first major movie deal, his manager decides he needs protection. What he doesn’t expect, is to be attracted to the cold bastard who’s now running his life.

Balthazar Grant, freelance bodyguard, is a huge, handsome, rough and ready former Marine, trained by the best, and willing to step between Storm and anyone stupid enough to come at him. Always stoic and serious, Taz lends a deadly presence to Storm’s entourage whenever he ventures out in public. Storm doesn’t want a bodyguard, much less one who won’t let him livehis fast and loose lifestyle with impunity and he’s certainly not one to be dictated to by an overconfident Marine who has opinions about everything including who he should hook-up with.

When a deadly threat hits Storm’s world, he’s suddenly living his own reality show, only this one has an outcome which doesn’t involve being voted off an island. Will Storm wake up before it’s too late and will Taz be able to fight his attraction to the handsome young superstar while trying to convince him he’sin very real danger? The pair will soon learn that reality is stranger than fiction.

Excerpt

As soon as Storm was recognized, a roar went up from the teeming crowd behind the velvet rope and Ranger stuck out a thickly muscled bicep, blocking a couple of enthusiastic fans who decided to try to jump the rope and get close to their idol.

“Step back behind the rope, douche,” Taz clearly heard as Ranger growled at a twinkish man with hair the combination of neon pink and black, as he tried to vault over it with a pad of paper and a pen in his hand. It was all Taz could do to keep from bursting out in laughter at his friend’s apt description of the small man. The guy looked up at Ranger’s sinister dark features with wide eyes and took three steps back while gulping so loud it was nearly audible above the cries of the crowd.

“Storm! You’re my hero!” one fan cried out while waving a pad of paper. The mostly older teen to twenty-something crowd was dressed wildly, some with multicolored hair, most with autograph books and eight by ten glossy photos for the star to sign. As Storm and his agent walked up to them, Storm turned and threw a look over his shoulder, making eye contact with Taz. Taz felt a wave of satisfaction run through him when he realized the star was aware of his presence at his back. Taz nodded at him again and Storm smiled a bright smile before turning toward the throng of his fans given backstage passes to meet the celebrity. If it were up to Taz, he wouldn’t allow his client anywhere near his fans but he also understood that Storm would be nothing if it weren’t for those who adored him. The whole thing creeped him out just a bit. Taz couldn’t imagine having that much adulation showered down on him every time he turned around, and frankly he couldn’t quite understand why anyone would want it. Celebrities like Storm Ellison and others seemed to have the paparazzi swarming around them everywhere they went. He wondered how they could ever find any peace at all but Storm seemed to thrive on his fans and as he stepped up and began signing autographs while Ranger held them back, Taz noticed how the fans responded to him.

“Oh, Storm, I just love you!” one man said, dreamily. “If you want, I’ll go down on you right here.”

“Back the fuck off, Sunshine, or you’re gonna be going down and not in the fun way,” Ranger growled, balling his fist and showing it to the man.

The guy looked over at Taz’s friend, gave him the up and down look and then did a finger snap in his face. “You’re too rough for me, Brutus,” he lisped.

**4.5 Stars**

Patricia Logan is a new author for me and I liked her writing style very much. The story was well-thought out and character-driven. It was a bit predictable, but definitely not boring.

I adored both Storm and Taz, the superstar and his bodyguard. Taz was strong and silent and so reticent at starting a relationship with Storm, even when everyone but Storm seemed to realize that’s what he wanted. Storm was a bit immature, but that was perfectly understandable given the world he lived in, and he was also caring and trusting, and so likeable you couldn’t not love him. And when they finally give into their attraction, boy, if they don’t make the pages sizzle! *fans self* It wasn’t just that, but the tenderness between them, too. It was loving and sweet, at the same time that it was hot, which gave it that extra-something that made me enjoy it even more.

Jules and Rebecca were fantastic secondary characters. Both were fun to read and provided some comic-relief and awesome interactions with Storm and Taz. And I adored Taz’s family, especially his mother, and how welcoming they were with Storm

I particularly enjoyed the story in the second half when things started heating up between Taz and Storm and when the sub-plot with a nefarious Guru began unraveling. While I figured some of this sub-plot from the start, I hadn’t quite figured it all the twists and turns it will take and it blew me away.

This is definitely a book that I would read over and over and enjoy it all the same, and I’ll certainly be on the look-out for more of Patricia’s books, especially the ones that will follow in her Bodyguard Series.
