A SEDITIOUS AFFAIR
By KJ Charles
Silas Mason has no illusions about himself. He’s not lovable, or even likable. He’s an overbearing idealist, a radical bookseller and pamphleteer who lives for revolution . . . and for Wednesday nights. Every week he meets anonymously with the same man, in whom Silas has discovered the ideal meld of intellectual companionship and absolute obedience to his sexual commands. But unbeknownst to Silas, his closest friend is also his greatest enemy, with the power to see him hanged—or spare his life.
A loyal, well-born gentleman official, Dominic Frey is torn apart by his affair with Silas. By the light of day, he cannot fathom the intoxicating lust that drives him to meet with the radical week after week. In the bedroom, everything else falls away. Their needs match, and they are united by sympathy for each other’s deepest vulnerabilities. But when Silas’s politics earn him a death sentence, desire clashes with duty, and Dominic finds himself doing everything he can to save the man who stole his heart.

A Seditious Affair runs in a parallel timeline as the previous book in the Society of Gentlemen series, A Fashionable Indulgence (which I loved to pieces, you can find my 5+ Star review here), some of the events in both books overlapping as K. J. Charles offers us a different perspective on them. You need to read A Fashionable Indulgence first, as it gives the reader a deeper insight into Richard Vane's Society of Gentlemen, The Ricardians, and how it works.
"Funny thing, I never feel weaker than when I'm with you. But after, I can keep going another week, because there's you at the end of it." Silas to Dom, A Seditious Affair.
Silas and Dom have been meeting anonymously for over a year, neither of them asking who the other is, but discovering in each other a perfect match to fulfill their needs. They are almost complete opposites, and yet, they provide the other with something that no one else can. For Silas it's having someone who submits beautifully to his commands and who is an avid reader and with whom he can discuss and argue some of the books they share during those Wednesday appointments that neither of them is willing to give up for anything. And for Dom, it's the knowledge that he can trust Silas, that he can give him his obedience and in return he'll have his darkest desires met.
Silas is a seditionist and Dom is a high-ranking officer at the Home Office, and when Silas starts being persecuted by one of Dom's colleagues, desire and love will clash with duty and stubbornness.
I absolutely loved this book! I loved Silas and Dom as a couple, I loved seeing them lay the foundation for something bigger as they met every Wednesday, as they fell for each other and their trust in the other grew. Neither of them asked more of the other than they were willing to give, even if it killed them. They were aware of everything that was at stake and were mature enough to resolve their issues. Nevermind that they had great chemistry and their scenes together certainly raised the temperature in the room a few notches!
One thing I particularly love about this series, is how K.J. Charles blends romance and history, showing us in a realistic manner how things could have happened in that particular time period.
It was amazing to see Richard, Harry, Julius and the rest of the Ricardians in action! And I'm very intrigued about the next book in the series, A Gentleman's Position, that will feature Richard and his valet David Cyprian, especially since we get to see how David is the puppeteer making everyone dance to his tune. It certainly made things even more interesting in this book to see how he worked with everything at his disposal to get the results he, or rather Richard wanted.
Definitely a book that I will happily re-read over and over again!
