Short Bio:
Nico Jaye is a fan of all things HEA and has dragged her romance collection along for her moves from San Francisco to Los Angeles to Chicago to New York and back. She thinks reading is awesome and loves that she can hang out night after night with crinoline-wearing debutantes, brawny firemen in suspenders, and werewolf shifters with Scottish brogues. An overall feline enthusiast, Nico secretly (or not so secretly?) adores Hello Kitty, cat GIFs, spontaneous traveling, pretending to be crafty, emoticons, hot menfolk, and parenthetical statements (not necessarily in that order). After starting as the pitcher for Team Awesome (literally) and visiting places like South Africa, Oman, and Fiji, Nico discovered that letting the boys in her head tell her where they want to go could actually be the most exciting journey of all.

Excerpts:

PG rated (no explicit content):

A note from Nico: Some of you might be wondering what First Shift means to an alpha werewolf in this universe. Well…here's a little taste of the opening scene. Hope you like it!

He’d suspected nine days ago, but he hadn’t dared to hope.
This night, though, with the first full moon since he’d started at Dilarium, confirmed it.
Curled up on his side in the living room of his subleased townhome, Tanner gritted his teeth, his eyes squeezing shut as he felt the irrepressible movement of bones shifting beneath his skin. The silky carpet was cool and soft against his cheek, and he pressed his face into it, struggling with that over which he had absolutely no control. His body was on fire, his blood pumping through his veins at supersonic speed. An invisible spike pierced his fingertips, one by one, while his jaw rearranged itself on his face.
“AaaaaaaaAAAAAGGGHHH!”
He couldn’t hold back the scream that ripped through him as he felt his spine stretch, then curve, turning him into that one elusive form he’d craved for all of these years: werewolf.
A First Shift was supposed to be the hardest.
The first time bone broke and mended in its transformation into that creature of the night. The first time claws extended, pointed tips puncturing nail beds to replace human fingers. The first time fangs punched out, the teeth of a hunter replacing those of a benign human.
A First Shift was shocking. It was thrilling. It was painful.
Above all, it was exhilarating.
A First Shift meant he had found his mate.

R-rated (explicit content):

“I love making you gasp,” Jon said, the glint in his eyes holding a hint of mischief. He stroked Tanner’s cock with a strong grip, eliciting another sharp intake of breath. “Good?” Jon asked, his brows raised and those sensuous lips curled up in a wicked grin.
“Very,” Tanner growled, then kissed him deeply. His hand firm on Jon’s hip, he nudged him gently. “Now it’s my turn,” he whispered. “My turn to make you gasp until you’re begging.”
Jon’s eyes went wide, and a flare of desire lit in his gaze. “What—what should I do?”
Tanner slowly stroked the warm skin beneath his palm. “It would be easier if you turned over,” he said softly. “Then, after that, you don’t need to do anything except feel.”
The corner of his lip tilting up in a smile of anticipation, Jon followed the suggestion and turned, allowing a pillow to be positioned beneath his hips. With his back arched while lying on his stomach, Jon propped himself on his elbows and twisted around to glance at Tanner seated behind him.
Tanner knelt between Jon’s parted legs, the soft hairs on Jon’s limbs brushing against his own. He stared at Jon’s form: the perfect stretch of skin, the gentle slope of his shoulders, the musculature of his back, the rounded curve of his ass.
Jon was beautiful.
And Jon was his.

Mari's Review:

*ARC provided by the Author to Bayou Book Junkie in exchange for a fair and honest review.*

This book is a delightful, fun read, with just a sprinkle of angst. The first part of the story is lighter, as we see Tanner, who has been waiting for a long time to find his mate, go through his First Shift, which signifies that he’s met his mate. Only problem is that he has no clue who his mate is, so he goes in a series of disastrous dates until he finally realizes what us as readers already know, that Tanner’s assistant Jon is his mate. By then, though, some other unforeseen circumstances come into play and Jon disappears and now it’s Tanner’s turn to go after him and convince him to give him and them a chance.

Tanner is kind of oblivious, but cute. It was fun seeing him fumble through dates with other men and then go out with Jon and not notice how different it was with them, until it was too late.

Jon is adorable, and his family was a fantastic surprise and the interaction with them really added up to the second part of the story. It was lovely to see Jon’s surprise that Tanner had followed after him and his mother having to practically force them to go on a camping trip so they could know each other better.

Tanner and Jon together were pretty hot, too. Loved that Jon gained confidence as they knew each other better and that Tanner was so protective of Jon. They fit quite well together.

I really liked the paranormal part of the story, too. It seemed like a rather original take on the shifter aspect. All in all, a very good, entertaining story that I’d love to read again for sure.

Rating: 4.5 shifting stars.
