Despite the best-laid plans, life sometimes has other ideas.
Ethan Yoder has toiled to escape his small-minded farming community, and he’s finally earned his degree and made it to Indianapolis—where he lands a job at a pharmaceutical company and meets handsome and successful Marcus. Marcus introduces Ethan to the fun-filled life of his dreams—fancy dinners, courtside seats at NBA games, even a trip to the Indianapolis 500. But Marcus’s happy-go-lucky veneer hides a man frustrated with a job he hates and his failure at romance due to factors he’s only beginning to understand. Ethan still has his eyes on the prize—a lucrative career—and he must figure out how to hold on to one opportunity without letting another slip away. If he and Marcus can come to a deeper understanding, their road might lead to a happily ever after.
States of Love: Stories of love that span every corner of the United States.

3 Stars

Ethan Yoder can't wait to see the small farming town he grew up in staring at him from his rear view mirror. So what if he has to work 4+ jobs while finishing college? It will all pay off if he keeps his “eye on the prize”. When he gets an offer to work for a Pharmaceutical company, he jumps at it, while it may be only temporary there’s a chance they’ll keep him on permanently and he can finally live his life free and open.

Marcus Light went to a great school to have the chance to do something he truly loves. But instead of the life he imagined he’s working a job he hates, paying not only his bills but his mother’s as well. His poor car is on its last leg and he’s having trouble coming to terms with his complicated feelings about sex. The one thing he’s sure about however is that Ethan means something to him.

Both men need to figure out how to live their lives now that they’re full fledged adults but “adulting can be hard” and their relationship has its own hurdles they’ll need to clear.

Sorry, but this one wasn’t a win for me. I found it hard to connect with the characters or to completely see the connection between them. Ethan seemed likable in the beginning but then somewhere along the way I found him to be annoying. Marcus was a character who in my mind I had this vision of being older, brooding, sexy (don’t ask what put these things in my head because I couldn’t tell you) but was far from it. Of course in the book's defense that was more my fault than anything.

The story had a lot going on, at times more than I think it needed and a lot of the excess drama was just over the top and too much. I feel like I need to be vague because the blurb gave none of this away. So let me just say that this story covers quite a bit of themes. Growing up, coming out, self discovery, sexuality, friendships and family, love and acceptance. While I didn’t care for it, others may have a completely different take on things.
