Release Day Review ~ The Spirit Key (Lock and Key Book One) by Parker Williams

Title: The Spirit Key
Series: Lock and Key: Book One
Author: Parker Williams
Release Date: January 15, 2019
Category: Paranormal: Ghosts, Mystery/Suspense
Pages: 205
When he was eight years old, Scott Fogel died. Paramedics revived him, but he came back changed. Ghosts and spirits tormented Scott for over a decade until, thinking he was going mad, he did the only thing he could.
He ran—leaving behind his best friend, Tim Jennesee.
Scott’s had five normal, ghost-free years in Chicago, when the spirit of Tim’s mother comes to him and begs him to go home because Tim’s in trouble and needs him.
He isn’t prepared for what he finds when he goes home—a taller and sexier Tim, but a Tim who hasn’t forgiven Scott for abandoning him… a Tim whose body is no longer his own. The ghost of a serial murderer has attached itself to Tim, and it’s whispering dark and evil things. It wants Tim to kill, and it’s becoming harder for Tim to resist. To free the man who has always meant so much to him, Scott must unravel the mystery of the destiny he shares with Tim.

4.5 Stars!

I loved Scott from the first page, which is a good thing since the book is told mostly from his perspective. There was just something about him that just caught my interest from the Prologue and made me feel for him and all he had to go through, especially during his teenage years. While I liked Tim as well, I'm not sure if I completely warmed up to him. It might have been because his moods were understandably erratic, but hopefully, we'll see a different side of him in the next books in the series. The connection Scott and Tim shared was undeniable, as was their love, even after being apart for so long. I could've done without the angry, rough, bordering on BDSM sex, although, again, it made sense all things considered.

This was my first book by Parker Williams and I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of his writing. The plot was complex and detailed—a bit overly so in some parts, maybe—but I was intrigued about Scott and Tim's 'gift', and appreciated the background info we were given. The mystery was captivating, if a little scary in some parts, and it had a satisfying resolution. The characters were well-developed and even if there were a few things that were brushed over, I'm definitely on board for more of Scott and Tim and this series.

Very recommendable!

  7. I don't mind a religious aspect to a book as long as the author doesn't beat me over the head with dogma.
